Westlane Course Description for Year Long Classes in Language Acquisition

Westlane Middle School offers three languages of study in accordance with the Middle Years Program of the International Baccalaureate. The Language B offerings include Spanish, French and Chinese.  The expectation is that students will make a three-year commitment to the same language. Students will have an opportunity to two high school credits for their studies in middle school after completing their 8th grade year of Language B study. Language B – 6th, 7th & 8th Grade Program: These Language B courses introduce the student to the world language and its culture. The language is taught in its cultural context, integrating speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Students learn how to express opinions, communicate basic personal needs, to describe, and to make requests in a culturally appropriate manner. Through comparison, students gain a better understanding and appreciation of cultural similarities and differences. Students will experience different cultures and learn to acknowledge the value of language learning in an increasingly interdependent global society. Recommendations for Success: 6th Grade: “C” average in core classes from 5th Grade, passed ISTEP and reads on grade level. 7th Grade: Earned a C- or better in 6th Grade Language B Program, passed ISTEP and reads on grade level. 8th Grade: Earned a C- or better in 7th Grade Language B Program, passed ISTEP and reads on grade level.
